Press Release - Seminar on "Delivering Democracy in India"

The Embassy of India in collaboration with Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) New Delhi and Hudson Institute organized a day-long seminar on "Delivering Democracy in India" on Wednesday, 13 February 2019 at the Hudson Institute, Washington D.C.  More than 150 prominent representatives from the media, academic institutions, US Agencies and think tanks attended the seminar.

Chargé d'Affaires Ambassador Santosh Jha delivered the keynote address. The panel discussions were held on the following topics: i) Democracy and the Economy; ii) Democracy and Public Participation; and iii) Governance and Democracy in India. Speakers from India included Shri Surjit Bhalla, Economist & Chairman, Oxus Research & Investments, Shri Sanjay Paswan, Professor, Department of PM&IR, Patna University and Member, Bihar Legislative Council and Shri Ramaswami Balasubramaniam, Development Activist and Author.
 
The experts from the US side included:  Mr. Rick Rossow, Senior Adviser and Wadhwani Chair in U.S.-India Policy Studies, Center for Strategic and International Studies, Mr. Thomas Duesterberg, Senior Fellow, Hudson Institute, Mr. Richard Fontaine, Acting CEO, Center for New American Security, Mr. Daniel Twining,  President, International Republican Institute, Mr. Tod Lindberg, Senior Fellow, Hudson Institute and Ms. Aparna Pande, Research Fellow & Director of Hudson Institute's Initiative on the Future of India and South Asia.
 
The panelists underscored India's exceptional record as the world's largest democracy and its emergence as a shining example for the rest of the world. They also spoke on India's impressive record of economic growth and fast pace of ongoing transformation in India. Several India-specific features that had emerged over seven decades of functioning democracy were also highlighted.
