Press Release - Celebrations of 78th Independence Day of India

India’s 78th Independence Day was celebrated with joy and enthusiasm in Washington D.C. with a flag-hoisting ceremony on 15 August, 2024 at India House. The ceremony was attended by members of the Indian diaspora and friends of India. 

2. Ambassador of India H.E. Vinay Kwatra paid floral tributes at the Mahatma Gandhi statue in Washington D.C. Ambassador then unfurled the tricolor at India House, which was followed by singing of the national anthem. The address by the Hon'ble President of India Smt. Droupadi Murmu on the eve of India’s Independence Day was relayed during the ceremony.

3. In his remarks, Ambassador underscored that the independence day celebrations express the joy of 1.4 billion people at being part of this great nation. He further conveyed the greetings of the President to members of the Indian diaspora.

4. The program included a special Bharatnatyam performance to the tune of “Jayate Jayate Bharat Mata”. The Embassy felicitated the young winners of a painting competition organized by the Embassy on the theme of “My idea of India/Mother Earth”
